Floral Ave
Neighborhood Development — Skokie, Illinois
During a significant revitalization of its pedestrian-friendly main street, Skokie requested plans this neighborhood development for first-time homebuyers and families to take advantage of the walkable, transit-oriented area. The Floral Avenue community is designed for families both young and established who may work in Chicago, but crave the safety and comfort of a small-town life.
Rather than a flat wall of identical homes, MA created a fluctuating, highly textured streetscape defined by the hand-crafted character of the Arts and Crafts movement. Variations on detailing, bracketing, roof types, and window positioning and styles lend a unique character to each individual home. At the same time, a unifying theme revealed itself in the main thoroughfare’s name, Floral Avenue. To further distinguish individual house plans, beautiful custom art glass windows depicting flowering plants serve as iconic decorative elements in each residence.
