Urban Housing — Chicago, Illinois
Envisioning a new age-in-place community as an integral part of the neighborhood, rather than an isolated structure, MA created opportunities for residents to enjoy chance encounters with members of the surrounding LGBT community.
In addition to a new 60-unit housing development, the project reaches outside the building footprint to integrate an adjacent empty lot and historic police station building. The latter is re-envisioned as a community center, complete with a public library and medical campus.
In each spacious unit, Juliet balconies provide residents with easy access to fresh air and light. A rooftop conservatory allows residents to socialize with one another, all while cultivating produce year-round and contributing directly to air quality in a city renowned for its greening efforts.
