Philosophy
At McNicholas Architects, we endeavor to restore an architectural language that actually speaks. Rather than placeless modern buildings or banal practical solutions, our buildings tell stories of the people inside and around them.
They are also unapologetically beautiful. Our practice is steeped in the principles, proportions, and artistic details of great architecture of the past, yet every design is solidly rooted in the present moment, with a view toward the future.
We bring to each project a wealth and depth of knowledge of built form, which is then fused to the specific needs and desires of the client. We prioritize personal relationships with our clients and take pride in being involved from a project’s start to finish and on the macro and micro scales – offering services in everything from large-scale urban design and planning to the small-scale details necessary to achieve true beauty.
No two projects have ever been the same, and they never will be. With careful attention to the surroundings and project goals, our bespoke buildings and interiors are timeless, appearing that they have always been — and will always be — right where they are.
Process
This is not about us. It’s about you, your family, your constituents.
It’s about how you all feel living, working, learning, worshipping, passing by as a member of the surrounding community, or seeing the building a decade from now. These are paramount to our work. MA’s founders guide each project from vision to culmination. We act as partners, confidants, and guides to our clients, giving physical form to unique needs and desires. Trust is the road by which a project reaches its most beautiful form. Owners’ goals are thoughtfully integrated into the earliest design stages through collaboration and open communication. Relationships are everything to us, and the many clients we now count as friends are a point of pride and satisfaction.
Great architecture cannot be achieved in a vacuum; one size does not fit all. Architecture should be a collaborative endeavor, and in that respect, we believe it is essential to work closely with the owner, job contractors, artisans, and consultants to ensure the precise execution of each project. No detail is too small for our devotion, from installing a beautiful and long-lasting roofing system to discovering the perfect antique furniture or decorative tile.
Our architects possess a deep knowledge of environmentally responsible architectural solutions and the many paths to sustainability, including LEED certification. Finally, believing that architecture manifests a beauty that all should experience, we strive to give our talents back to communities with fewer resources that would benefit from meaningful designs.
